Depict evalutation

Our task was to create a 90 second film for the  Depict film competition. The first part involved pre production paperwork which was recce forms, storyboards and other various things. The second part was the filming. We had six lessons to complete the filming and sort the shots ready for editing.
For the final part, we had to edit all of the shots together, cut scenes and add effects.

Camera work-
within our short film, there are some shots I specifically like as i find they really add to the film, such as the over the shoulder shot of Lucy as she spots the attacker in the hallway and starts to back away into the wall.

There are a few shots that can be improved such as the shot where the camera looks up towards the door, we used a point of view shot but the effect did not seem to work as intended and raises the question as to why she was looking down again after being scared.

Mise-en-scene-
In our short film, we took extra care in the continuity of props, We made sure that the drink used in some of the scenes has the same amount in when it should and when things are placed down or moved, they are where they should be in the next scene to the next.

In our video, we didn't make too many errors with props and costume, though we did make one obvious mistake. In the scene where Lucy is being helped up by Chris, his shirt is a light colour but as the scene changes to another, his shirt turns to black for the last few scenes. Though this went un noticed in the class showing, this change in costume frustrates me because its a simple mistake that could easily have been avoided.

Editing and continuity-

In our short film, we used simple editing techniques such as simple fades to black to show passing of time and a fade to red to connote danger at the end of the film.

Another technique we used was a leave colour effect, this is used to pick out a colour from a specific scene and causes everything that does not match this colour to be black and white. This technique is also used in Sin City (2005). The red was picked mostly from the label of a coke bottle using the colour picker tool and changing the levels of colour and black and white. This can be seen in the picture bellow, the bottle and Lucy's nails are the only things with colour within the scene.

Though using this edit can add effect to the video, it does come with some problems. As red, when being filmed, is close to yellow, the saturation must be changed to stop some things having a yellow tint. We used garbage mat's to hide some of it but towards the end, they stopped working. This resulted in patchy red in some of the scenes. This is visible on The pencil, folders in the background and the bottle label.

Sound-
The sound in the first few clips of our video when there is no music is all ambient sound, it was all recorded at the same time as we were filming. When it comes to the music, its a different matter all together. The music was created by Lucy using Garage band. Both I and Lucy had a go at creating some different music and both were tested on the film, we chose the one that fits the best and creates the most effect for the audience.

Summary-
Overall, I am quite happy as to how the video was received. The audience in our class seemed to enjoy it and nobody really had many bad points about it. Most of the video is edited and filmed well, though I feel some things may have been done better than they were which caused less of an impact on the audience, it made it seem tacky and rushed, which was not the case.
