Documentary Mini Task
Expository Documentary-
An expository documentary is when the documentary has a voice over, personally addressing the audience, it is factual, the narrator does not base it on personal opinion but still raises questions as to the subject. they are basing things off of both facts and personal opinion and challenging their views to provoke a response. an example of this are things like 'Piers Morgans Life stories'.
Observational Documentary-
The documentary makers will not obstruct the flow of the documentary, following the subject in day to day life and observing them or actions of something. These type of documentaries often feature things that people actually care about, often close to the heart stories or to gain information on a certain subject. Here is an example of an Observational Documentary- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gmvMsKmSaTg&spfreload=10
Interactive Documentary-
Film makers like Louis Theroux interact with both the audience and the people in his documentary's, he asks them questions which sometimes leads to arguments,a nd in extreme cases, danger to himself and his crew. documentaries like this are popular as they have more excitement than just observing things, you get to find out more. An example of this type is- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vgzBTyLXwag&spfreload=10
Reflexive Documentary-
This type of documentary exposes how the documentary is made, it shows us what the film makers are doing as the documentary is being made, examples of this type of documentary are Powaqqatsi and Man With A Movie Camera. Powaqqatsi is made up of short clips of things happening around the world with music over the top, the purpose of this is to try and tell us how to feel during certain clips. Man With A Movie Camera is pretty much a documentary about a documentary. It features the film makers around Russia being filmed setting up cameras and filming and also an orchestra playing music that would have been played pver the top of the documentary when it was screening.
Performative Documentary-
This type of documentary involves re-enactments and dramatizations, conventions often used in crime documentaries or horrifying stories that have happened to people. Reenactments are useful because the viewer gets to understand better what the presenter us talking about, Such as when an investigation is under way and the victim says what happened, actors will play it out, sometimes more dramatic than it had originally occurred. an example of this is The Thin Blue Line
In my opinion, the best type of documentaries are Interactive and Performative documentary, as i feel they are the most appealing tot he audience and is more based on fact and personal opinion, people are able to have their say on issues that effect them. I find that they are easier to watch and I stay engaged for longer than I would if I watched different types of documentary.

Ben,
ReplyDeleteYou need a bit more detail in your definitions of the formats plus your example for expository is not right (you need a voice over and not a presenter).
Also, add a small conclusion at the end saying which format you like more and which is more honest / accurate.
