The Nature and Purpose of Research in the Media Indusrty

Primary Research/Self Generated Research-

What is it?
Primary research is information that you have gathered yourself using your own resources to enable you to collect it. Primary research is first hand information that you can collect using things like Surveys, Questionnaires and focus groups who will give their opinions or answer questions which allows you to complete your research.

What did you do?
In order to conduct Primary Research, I created a questionnaire so I could collect the responses in order to analyse them. I also requested feedback on the comments of the Youtube video to gain both positive and negative responses to enable me to complete and improve the video.

Secondary Research-

What is it?
Secondary research is research carried out by another source that you have compiled into one place. The research from your chosen subject will be gathered by an external source and put onto things like a website or a book that you can take, with permission, you may use the research in order to conduct your research.

What did you do?
I used secondary research in order to film my music video, I had to browse through the Facebook page of the band to gather some information before I contacted them in order to get an idea of the band members as people and also the music itself.

Quantitative research-

What is it?
Quantitative research is collected into graphs and tables and compared, much like a voting system, if there are two opinions, one is always going to be more popular than the other, they would be compared, such as "10 people say that heavy metal music is a very unpopular genre where as 15 say that is it"

Barb, the official viewing figure page in the UK monitor who watches television programs and when in order to record the most popular channels and programs. They arrange them into category's and add up to date facts and figures.

RAJAR do are the same as BARB in the sense that they record the figures and facts, although they focus on radio stations instead of Television .

What did you do?
I personally do not use this type of research, I find that often the opinions are biased due to the person conducting the research mostly targeting people who are either familiar with the subject or even who they know has a certain opinion in order to sway the results the way they hope it will go

Audience and Market Research-
When creating a production, you have to determine who it is going to be aimed at, you have to take into account such things as Age, Gender, Location, Status (Upper, middle or working class). Understanding your target audience is important as it enables you to be able to sell your product.

Creating my documentary involved a lot of thinking when it came to target audience as the genre of music I chose is not mainstream, I had to choose between doing something that interested me or what interested a wider audience, Therefore I chose to do both, educating the audience and also focusing on the band I had chosen to follow.

Production Research-

Before starting a production, I had to do a lot of planning, I first had to actually come up of an idea that would then be finalized with a location, props, actors etc. After finding the location, I had to do a release form and recce to ensure I could use the location and what type of capabilities it had, such as power outlets etc. Due to health and safety, after scouting and choosing my location, I had to complete a risk assessment, noting down the dangers that could come to me, the other people involved or the equipment, I also had to think of ways to prevent them or any further action I might take if an incident did occur.
Also for our productions, we had to fill out budget sheets, this was in case we  needed to claim our money back and also so we could see what we had spent our budget on. It also enabled us to have the items bought for us. before we were able to film, our actors or 'Talent' had to sign release forms, giving us their permission to be filmed and put online, if they were under 18, they must have a parent or guardian signature giving us permission.
