Animation Evaluations

Step One

As you can see from this small section of the responses that i have collected, the majority of the people who watched the animation said that they thought the target audience were young males between the ages of 15-20. The genre was not specified in the questionnaire but when I asked people they thought it was a horror sci-fi theme due to the monster attacking the city.
Every person who answered my questionnaire knew, when asked that it was stop motion animation using both fixed models and clay to create the models and also so that the model is adjustable when needed to create different forms from the same piece of clay.
when I asked people, they said they liked the characters that were in the animation but did not enjoy the sound affects as they seemed to find them annoying, especially the screams coming from the white Lego characters.

When creating our animation, one of the restrictions we had an issue with was copyright, due to using Lego pieces, we could not display the logo or any trademark points, this is why the Lego characters in our animation were pained white, taking any defining marks or styles apart from the shape away from them.
We also had an issue with our budget, having only £5 to create our sets and obtain props and materials for creating the characters and set. We had gone slightly over due to purchasing white paint and more clay to create our models, luckily we were able to source the materials for the set from things we had laying around at the time.

Timing was an issue when creating our animation, we had only six lessons to meet our deadline but due to having spare time, we managed to finish the important parts and start editing before our set time was up for the certain task, although we did need to go back and film a few more things to ensure that our animation met the required time of 10 seconds.
Making sure all of our filming was completed early, it allowed us more time to edit which definitely helped when it came to ensuring the best quality of film we could create, making sure that it ran smoothly when all of the pictures we put into order and cut down to size to fit the allotted time.

we definitely met the requirements of the brief, creating our Esting animation using the music they had provided along with following the rest of the rules that were set in place for us.

We received feedback of both our tutor and peers, we sent out a questionnaire asking what people thought of the animation, also after uploading them onto YouTube, we received comments on the video of what people did and did not like about the animations. The majority of the feedback was good, people seemed to enjoy our Esting although the things to be improved did seem to all be very closely related to the sound effects that we had used.

I feel that I have learned a lot while creating this project, such as following a brief and different skills in animation, i have learned hoe to make a stop motion animation that runs smoothly.

I think that the animation in its self went quite well, it ended up mostly how I wanted it to be and it stuck close to the original idea. I learned some new skills and learned how to use some new equipment such as the DSLR cameras, which helped make sure that the pictures used to create the animation were the best possible quality I could manage. Although some of the pictures were not very good, a few of them had a little bit of the cardboard used to make the set in shot, I feel that this is one of the things I would change, ensuring that the picture quality was as high standard as possible.
Editing also went really well, there were a few hitches such as when I lost some of our images needed to finish the animation but I managed to recover some and the rest I just took new pictures, that did dig into my editing time but I still had plenty of time to finish everything. I was going for a film noire/ 50's horror style, creating a black and white film, I also quite liked the idea from Sin City of leaving only certain colours in the film, in this instance it was purple due to the E4 logo being this colour.

When creating the set, I had to take into consideration the limited resources, money and space we would have to create the whole animation, this is why the set was created using a cardboard box. To create the set, I designed a backdrop of a city skyline in the night on Photoshop and glued it to the back of the box, we took off one of the sides to allow access for the camera and so the light could fill the whole set.
If I could change a few things, it would be the sound because the music provided by E4 was really bad, we couldn't find any music to fit our animation so we had to make do with what was provided.
I would change the set as well, I think that it was rushed a little bit meaning that it was low quality but it did serve its purpose.  Next time I would take more time and care in the designing stage and creating the sets and props rather than rushing them and taking the sacrifice to have longer for filming.

                                Step 2-

To review my project, I would prefer to do an oral presentation in front of an audience, this is because I feel that talking to the audience is a much more effective way of promoting the product/production than giving a written report, you are able to engage with the audience and actually see their reactions when they view the product.

The only way my animation was viewed was by uploading it to YouTube and sending it out with my questions. I think that if I had uploaded it to various other websites and social media websites such as facebook and Twitter,  I could have broadened the audience.

These are some of the results I collected after receiving feedback from the questionnaire-

as you can see from the responses, my work was generally  received quite well, although there is mixed reactions, most of them are positive.

Step 3-

I believe that I could have managed my time better, I spent a long time creating the set and the characters for the animation and a lot of time filming, having to go back and re shoot and add things but I don't think that I left myself enough time to edit the clips to the best of my ability.

I did manage to meet the criteria of the brief, using the music provided and ensuring that the E4 logo was included in it. I didn't break any rules of the competition and even got it finished in the time allowed. I also used guidance from the E4 website, such as viewing previous entrees into the competition in order to gauge and idea of how my animation should look.

To gain feedback, I created a questionnaire that I sent out to a lot of people via email, along with a link to the animation after it was uploaded to YouTube, I also asked my friends and family to take part. After I collected the responses, I arranged them into one place by  taking screenshots.

The general tone of the feedback was quite good, most of the responses were positive, complimenting the style and genre of the animation, although some were more negative, such as the ones about the sound effects that were added. Although we had mixed responses, most of them were positive.

During this project, I have learned different animation skills, before I started, I had no idea how to create a stop motion animation but now I have learned, I feel that if I was to create another, it would definitely be an improvement on the one I have already created.
I also learned how to work strictly to a brief in order to create the production, due to it being a competition, I had to make sure I followed the rules and did not go away from the original concept of the Esting.
The only issue I had with working so closely to a brief was the lack of freedom I had. Although it is only small things that i was unhappy with, the music was one of them as we had to use one of a selection of songs provided by the competition, I feel that if we had a wider choice or even a completely independent choice, I could have chosen or created something that fit the style of my animation better.

I believe that if I worked in the media industry as a career, I would be able to work to a brief in order to finish the task I had been set, I would be more than capable of doing so, even if I did not agree with some of the aspects to it. If I was given a little more freedom to take the task and create something more in my image I think that I could make a product that I would be more happy with.

Although I enjoyed planning and creating my animation, I don't think that it is the career path for me. I feel that the skills I have learned are not quite enough to take it any further. There are other aspects of media that I find far more enjoyable that would suit me better to make a career of.

Some of the aesthetic qualities that I liked the most was the style of the animation, we chose to make it look like an old film, our inspiration came  mostly from the 1958 film, The Blob, in which an unexplained monster starts to terrorize the town of Downington, Pennsylvania.
